Boxelder Bugs, Stink Bugs & Elm Seed Bugs

Residential & Commercial Seasonal Control Services

When spring sunshine hits your siding or fall temperatures begin to cool, you may suddenly notice hundreds of red-lined bugs, shield-shaped stink bugs, or small seed bugs covering the sunny side of your home or business.

These are overwintering nuisance pests — and while they don’t damage your home structurally, they can become extremely overwhelming.

OutLook Pest Management provides targeted seasonal treatments designed specifically for:

• Boxelder Bugs

• Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs

• Elm Seed Bugs

• Other seasonal overwintering invaders

Serving residential homes, apartments, HOA communities, warehouses, and commercial buildings throughout Oregon.

What Are These Bugs & Where Do They Come From?

Boxelder Bugs

Primarily feed on boxelder trees, maple trees, and ash trees. They are commonly found:

  • On tree trunks and bark
  • In seed pods
  • Under loose bark
  • Around fallen leaves

Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs

Feed on fruit trees, ornamental plants, vineyards, and agricultural crops. They are a major agricultural pest and can damage:

  • Apples
  • Pears
  • Hazelnuts
  • Grapes
  • Vegetable crops

Elm Seed Bugs

Common around elm trees. They feed on elm seeds and often congregate in large numbers near:

  • Tree bark
  • Tree bases
  • Leaf litter
  • Foundations near elm trees

Why Do They Land on Homes?

These insects are strongly attracted to:

• Warm siding exposed to afternoon sun

 • Light-colored buildings

 • Stucco and textured surfaces

 • Gaps around soffits, siding, and window frames

In spring, they emerge from overwintering sites and gather on sunny walls.
In
fall, they seek protected voids to survive winter.

They are not trying to infest your home — they are trying to use it as a warm resting surface.

However…

Once inside wall voids, attics, or soffits, they become a major nuisance.

Life Cycle Overview

All three species follow a similar pattern:

Spring

Adults emerge from overwintering sites.
They mate and lay eggs on host trees.

Early Summer

Eggs hatch into nymphs.
Nymphs feed heavily on tree seeds, fruit, or sap.

Late Summer

New adults develop.
Populations grow and begin congregating.

Fall

Adults seek overwintering locations.
This is when they mass on homes and buildings.

They do not reproduce indoors, but they can cluster in large numbers inside wall voids.

Why They’re a Nuisance for Homeowners

• They stain siding and curtains
• They emit odor when crushed (especially stink bugs)
• They gather in large clusters
• They enter through tiny gaps
• They trigger customer complaints in commercial settings
• They are unsightly for businesses and storefronts

While mostly a nuisance pest for homeowners, stink bugs in particular are a serious agricultural pest, causing millions of dollars in crop damage nationwide.

Our Treatment Approach

Seasonal Exterior Barrier Treatment

We apply a professional-grade microencapsulated residual insecticide to:

• Foundation perimeter
• Around windows and doors
• Under eaves and soffits
• Siding seams and cracks
• Areas where bugs congregate
• Tree-adjacent structure zones (If applicable)

These products typically provide 60–90 days of residual protection, (Wheather dependant) which is ideal for the spring and fall activity periods when these pests are most active.

Warranty & Service Policy

Because these insects are highly mobile and influenced by weather, surrounding trees, and neighboring properties, we do not offer a standard warranty on seasonal invader treatments.

However:

We do provide a 45-Day Touch-Up Service for treated areas that continue to experience concentrated activity. (WE DO NOT TREAT THE WHOLE HOME, WE ONLY DO SPOT TREATMENTS)

If specific sections of the home remain problematic within 45 days, we can return and re-treat those areas as needed.

Our goal is realistic, effective seasonal suppression — not over-promising what nature controls.

Outlook services residential homes

Residential Services

Perfect for:

• Homes with heavy siding coverage

• Properties near maple, elm, or fruit trees

• Homes with past fall invasions

• Homes with sun-exposed southern or western walls

We recommend spring and/or fall preventative treatment before peak migration begins.

Outlook Pest Mgmt. Offers Commercial Services

Commercial Services

Ideal for:

• Warehouses

• Apartment complexes

• HOA communities

• Storefronts

• Agricultural support buildings

• Schools and offices

Visible insect clustering on buildings can create negative impressions for customers and tenants. Seasonal barrier treatments greatly reduce mass congregation on exterior surfaces.

Why Choose OutLook Pest Management?

• Locally owned and operated
• No long-term contracts
• Targeted seasonal approach
• Professional commercial-grade products
• Honest expectations
• 45-Day touch-up support

We focus on prevention and realistic seasonal control — not temporary knockdowns.

When Should You Schedule?

Best timing:

• Early Spring (before heavy congregating begins)
• Late Summer / Early Fall (before overwintering movement)

Waiting until bugs are already inside wall voids makes treatment less effective.

Preventative exterior barrier treatments are the most reliable solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are boxelder bugs covering my house?

Boxelder bugs are attracted to warm, sun-exposed siding in spring and fall. They gather on homes as part of their seasonal migration and overwintering behavior, especially if maple, ash, or boxelder trees are nearby.

Are stink bugs dangerous?

Brown marmorated stink bugs are not dangerous to people, but they are major agricultural pests that damage fruit trees and crops. Indoors, they are nuisance pests known for emitting odor when disturbed.

What are elm seed bugs and why do I see so many?

Elm seed bugs feed on elm tree seeds and often gather in large numbers near foundations and sunny walls. They are common in areas with mature elm trees and become most visible in summer and fall.

How does your treatment work?

We apply a professional-grade microencapsulated residual insecticide around foundations, siding seams, windows, doors, soffits, and congregating areas. The microcapsules provide extended protection (typically 60–75 days) and attach to insects as they crawl across treated surfaces.

Do you offer a warranty?

Due to the seasonal and migratory nature of these pests, we do not provide a standard warranty. However, we offer a 45-day touch-up service for treated areas that continue to experience concentrated activity.
